How to Set Up a GDPR Compliant Cookie Banner

In this article, you'll learn how to set up a GDPR-compliant cookie banner using an external tool.

What you'll need:

•        A MerwinSaaS account

•        An external tool (e.g., Cookiebot at manage.cookiebot.com)

Note: Cookiebot's free plan only allows you to add one domain name.

Steps

1.     In the Domains tab, click the green Plus (+) button to add your domain name.

2.     Go to the Banner tab to customize the look and behavior of your cookie banner. Select your preferences and configure the Cookies consent method.

3.     In the Privacy Trigger tab, enable the Privacy Trigger, which will appear on all pages of your website and allow visitors to view and manage their consent. Configure its position and theme.

4.     The Declaration tab (paid users only) allows you to automatically display detailed cookie information.

5.     In the Content tab, describe the general purpose of your site's cookie use. Free plan users can only enter descriptions in one language. Paid plan users can add multiple languages and enable automatic language detection.

6.     In the Your scripts tab, you will find two code snippets: the first must be added to your site's header, and the second must be added as an HTML element on the specific page where you want the cookie declaration to appear.

Important notes:

•        This solution also works for a blog. Simply add the header script to the Blog layout page and the banner will be applied to all blog posts and pages automatically.

•        The site suggested here is an example. There are many other tools you can use to set up a cookie banner.
